jennifer-lawrence-hunger-games-promo-280x280The The Hunger Games movie has us drooling over the unique character names (and um, yeah, seeing Peeta and Gale)! So grab your bow and arrow and take aim at this kick-butt list of Games-inspired baby names!

Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of The Hunger Games, is the epitome of girl power (um, hello–she’s a profesh hunter and Hunger Games champ), and has a powerfully cool name to match.

The blond-haired, blue-eyed Peeta Mellark (Katniss’ partner and love interest) is as classically dreamy as his almost classic name. Peeta is super-similar to Peter, which has been popular with parents for decades!

This earthy, off-the-beaten-path name was plucked straight from the rosebush for Katniss’ younger sister, Primrose Everdeen.

Gale Hawthorne is Katniss’ hunting partner and BFF. Interestingly, Gale was a common boy’s name before it was a common girl’s name. It was on male baby name charts from the early 1880s until the late 1960s!

OK, so Katniss and Peeta’s mentor and trainer Haymitch Abernathy is a teensy bit of a lush. But his ruggedly awesome moniker bears a striking similarity to the Celtic-tough-guy-cool name Hamish, another form of Seamus.

Suzanne Collins is really awesome at finding infrequently used, “green” names for her female characters. We’re just glad she chose Rue for Katniss’ friend and ally rather than Stinkweed Dandelion or something.

Cato & Clove
Katniss and Peeta’s main opponents from District 2 in the Games have competitively cool names. Cato has big-time appeal with its trendy “O” sound, and Clove is an underused nature name with some serious spice.

The district mayor’s daughter and Katniss’ friend, Madge is a shortened form of the hip and happenin’ 1950s-inspired name Margaret.

Hazelle, Rory, Vick & Posy
Suzanne Collins totally embraced names with vintage flair, coupled with references to nature– and Gale Hawthorne’s entire family is proof!
