harry potter names intro image

Babyus namicus! Part II of the final Harry Potter flick has us drooling over J.K. Rowling’s amazingly creative character names. So grab your wire-rimmed glasses and take a gander at this magically delicious list of Hogwarts-inspired baby names!

Harry Potter, the main magic man himself, is clearly wise beyond his years– he’s got a name with that little-old-man chic we love and quite the collection of V-neck sweaters and pressed trousers.

Ron Weasley is HP’s BFF and it’s a fitting moniker, since Ronald means “ruler with counsel.” Other notable Ronalds: President Ronald Reagan, astronaut Ronald Evans and, let’s not forget, Ronald McDonald.

Perhaps the most unpronouncable name in the “Harry Potter” series (it’s her-MY-oh-nee, people!), this off-the-beaten-path name was plucked from Greek mythology for the main female character, Hermione Granger.

Quidditch Seeker Cedric Diggory is a champion of a character with a seriously cool name to match. Now, J.K. Rowling, why don’t you Dig-gory up a little bit of magic and send Robert Pattinson our way?

Ginny Weasley, Ron’s lil’ sis and the love of Harry’s life, has a name with the granny-chic vibe that’s totally popular among hip parents today. Especially those parents who conceived their sweet little Ginnys whilst drinking a similarly named beverage. Wink.

Witchy woman, Luna Lovegood is the epitome of girl power (um, hello–she co-led Dumbledore’s Army!) and she’s got a powerfully cool name to match. Which begs the question–why wasn’t there ever a Luna Spice in the Spice Girls?

What comes to mind when you hear the name Fleur Delacour? Oh, probably just the most painfully cool French woman, sitting at an outdoor cafe, wearing a beret and singing Jane Birkin tunes. Le sigh.

The name Oliver is all over the place lately–from hipster babies to hipster puppies. So it’s no wonder how Oliver Wood, the totally hip and awesome captain of the high-flying Gryffindor Quidditch team, got his name!

The epitome of Celtic tough-guy cool, Seamus sounds like someone who beats people up. For fun. And Harry Potter’s Seamus–Seamus Finnigan–measures up to this rugged name as a member of Dumbledore’s Army!

J.K. Rowling is really awesome at finding infrequently used yet fantastic names for her female characters. We’re just glad she chose Lavender Brown for Harry’s schoolmate, rather than Asparagus Cerulean. Or something.
