Top Chef judge Gail Simmons and husband Jeremy Abrams welcomed a baby girl named Dahlia Rae on Dec. 29. Dahlia is the first child for both.

WHAT IT MEANS: The Dahlia flower is a perennial plant mainly native to Mexico.

WHERE IT ORIGINATED: The plant was named for the 18th century Swedish botanist Anders Dahl, whose last name means “valley.” Since the plant’s name wasn’t formally recognized until 1805, Dahlia’s usage as a given name is fairly modern.

POTENTIAL NICKNAMES: The most intuitive is Lia, which is a name in its own right.

KNOW THIS: Dahlia is also the name of a genus of moths.

POP CULTURE CONNECTION: The name turns up often in video games, such as Silent Hill, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and the Dying for Daylight series.
