Which Lily name?

I think I’ve probably mentioned it before, but Lily has great meaning to me, and is very sentimental, and I’m set on keeping it in some form on my list. I’ve decided to let Liliana go for now–it just seems too elaborate and it’s become sort of blah–so now I’m trying to decide between two alternatives: Lillian or Lilia. And I’m stuck! Which Lily name do you prefer? Do you think one goes better with Isabelle, Arianne, Olivia, Violet, Rachel, Charlotte, Eleni, Hannah, Eva, Catherine, Emmeline, and Tess? Also, combo ideas for your favorite of the two? I’ve tossed around some combos, but I’m not set on anything yet.

    Thanks, ladies!

I personally just love Lily on its own. But I’m a little partial. Of the two I’d pick Lilia

and for combo i’d go with
Lilia Charlotte (for one middle name)
but I remember you usually use two so
    Lilia Charlotte Emmeline.

I’d stay away from using any of the other names that end in -a with it as a combo. But I also like Lilia Charlotte Eve

Lily on its own I have considered, and I do like it, and I love flower names in general, but I just really love the option of a fuller name for Lily. I like Lilia Charlotte Eve a lot! I think Lilia Charlotte’s gorgeous, but when I was wondering which went better with my list, I was thinking sibling-wise, not for a combo. I’m not sure I want to repeat Charlotte, since it’s already a FN on my list?

I’m also thinking about maybe Lilia Beatrix, to honor my grandfather (whose initials were L. B.). I’m still not sure about it, though, and I don’t really like any other “B” names more. I like Bryony, but I feel like Lilia Bryony is too naturey.

Honestly, I’m with Lilybell, I like Lily on it’s own a lot more than any other Lily names. But I like Lillian a lot more than Lilia. It has that classic but modern feel that most of your other names have, plus it’s so lovely.

Hmm … I like Lily or Liliana (or Lila) better than Lillian or Lilia.

lately i like lily on its own after modern family. i dont care for lilia. and i like lillian but i think i like liliana better. it sounds more modern. but i prefer the lily-anna pronunciation. so that could be confusing. so id go with just lily. its one of very few names ending in the EE sound that sound complete and sophisticated.

Lily is the bees knees! There is somehing fabulous about Liliana that I can’t quite put my finger on but I’ve never been a fan of Lilian. I’ve always loved Lila and it’s a beautiful name. Lilia is not my taste though I find the spelling to be very lovely.

Lilia is on my list! I just love it and I find that it is the best of the Lily variations because I can picture it on a child, young women and an old lady. I think of the options you have listed I like Lila Isabelle. The name combo I like is Lilia Renae!

Of those two choices, I prefer Lillian. Although, you really can’t go wrong with Lily by itself.

I just want to add that my daughter’s name is Isabella and we call her Bella. We decided to name her Isabella to have a “fuller” name like you said and looking back I kinda wish we had just named her Bella.
People she just meets have called her Isabella and she will not answer – she has had a cognitive delay (she is doing really well) but it confuses her and annoys her.

@jasonlovessara – Bella looks and sounds adorable. :) I think that’s the tricky thing–I felt left out because all my siblings had nicknames and I don’t, so I want my kids to have nicknames, but I’ve also seen my sister’s case where she feels like the only people who call her by her full name (Rebecca) are people who don’t know her and care about her like family (who call her Becca). Ideally I’d like to use nicknames and full names just about equally (and not just the full name when she’s in trouble!). If I had an Isabelle, she would be Isabelle as much as, if not more than Bella (or Belle, or Ella, or Issy–I like a lot of Isabelle’s nicknames!). I want my kids to have the best of both worlds.

I think I’ve decided on Lilia. For now, anyway. But I might change my mind later. I still really love Lillian and Liliana. Now I just need a combo.

    Lillian Alexis
    Lillian Elizabeth
    Lillian Chloe

I would stay away from all Lily type names. My cousin is Lilianna and is just one of five Lilys in her relatively small class.(Lili,Lilly,Lily,Lilia,&Lily-Anne) I do love the name there are just too many. BTW she is named for our grandmother Lillian.

@SarahJane – I am very set on Lily, honestly. I have followed its popularity for nearly five years now, and am very familiar with its popularity (and honestly, I’m years from having kids, and my kids will likely go to a very, very small private Christian school, so popularity very likely won’t be an issue). The last gift my grandmother gave me before she was laid to rest was a lily. The anniversary of her death was just yesterday. So you can understand how much it means to me and how likely I am to change it. Lily is the one name that can bring me to tears or make me laugh; the question isn’t so much IF I’ll use Lily, but when. I’m not so sure anymore that I’ll be using Lilia as a way to get it, even though I do have a combo in mind (Lilia Amelie Pearl, or maybe Lilia Amelie June), but Lily in some form is pretty much a staple on my list.
