    I know the last letters stand for “Husband, Wife, Son, Daughter” amongst others, but what is the D for and why does EVERYONE use it, even with DDog and DCat?! I probably sound like a total idiot but humour me please, I’m British.

    I’m pretty sure the first D stands for “dear” or “dearest”. I guess it’s just quicker for people to type DH than typing out husband.

    DH=Dear Husband
    DW=Dear Wife
    DS=Dear Son
    DD=Dear Daughter
    MIL=Mother inlaw
    FIL=Father inlaw

    Yep, ditto the pp’s (i.e. “previous posters” ;))!
    This site isn’t as acronym-crazy as some but I know it’s a whole new language to figure out when you start hanging out on message boards!

    Thanks guys :-)
    (I noticed people don’t use D for Dear for Mothers/Fathers-In-Law!)
