What did you do before TTC?

DH and I talked yesterday and agreed (compromised) that in the spring we will really talk about TTC again and decide one way or the other. Before I started TTC the first time, I went off my Class C drug, lost 20 lbs to get to my (then-goal) weight, and went to my OB/GYN for a preconception check-up.

I remember hearing recently that it’s a good idea to take prenatals for 6 months before you get pregnant so I decided to go ahead and start taking them now so I’ll be ready if we do agree to TTC. :) I’m also due for an annual with my ob/gyn soon so I’ll probably ask him some pre-conception questions and see if he has any other advice for me. I might ask him about going on Metformin to TTC this time because of my PCOS. And then, I’m continuing to chart (to avoid) so I’ll know what’s going on with my cycles before we start TTC.

Did you do anything to get ready for TTC?

Back when we were getting ready to TTC for Ethan, I remember the general advice being to get healthy as healthy as possible, get rid of bad habits like smoking, have a general checkup with the doctor, talk to your doctor about switching to pregnancy safe meds (if applicable) and starting prenatal vitamins 3 months ahead of time. I was actually very healthy at the time, didn’t smoke or drink, and just had to switch one med to something safer so it didn’t really feel like I had to do much other than take vitamins. They also recommend making sure you are current on all your vaccinations. I had a flu shot this year for the first time since college!

The second time around, I really wish I’d taken the time to get fit prior to TTC. Ironically, I was being impatient and didn’t want to wait to start. D’oh! I think I was in denial of my bad habits … lots of junk food and little exercise and the toll it had taken on my body. I’m still technically a healthy weight, but with a very high body fat which I definitely feel has hindered our success. Other than the obvious, like quit smoking and drugs and take prenatals, I think my biggest bit of advice to anyone is to get into good shape before TTC. Besides the fertility factor, pregnancy is physically exhausting!

Sounds like you already have a great start on things :)

That’s good advice, Inga. Thank you! I have been motivated for weight loss the past year and a half since finding out I had prediabetes, so that has helped me get past my previous plateau. I’ll try to keep up with running, too and the PNVs, etc. DH is focusing on his health as well post-heart-surgery and trying to get his back issues taken care of.

You should ask your doctor if you can keep taking Met in pregnancy…my doctor took me off of it right away. I was very confused, because I had read online that it may help prevent miscarriage. I’m curious what other doctors would say.

Interesting! Good question. I’ve heard others say they did take Met during pregnancy … but maybe that recommendation has changed just recently? Or maybe it’s different depending on your overall clinical picture? I also remember Trish telling me when I was TTC the first time that being on Met could help bring someone with PCOS’s miscarriage risk down to the normal risk level.
