using names made popular by recent movies?
A friend just mentioned she knew someone who just had a baby named Elsa. My friend thought it was cheesy to use a name from Frozen.
I felt like it was a valid choice though since Elsa was already gaining in popularity (though admittedly still relatively uncommon; in the 500s) and I didn’t feel like it should be off-limits just because of the movie.
But yes, I do think people hearing it in the movie will inspire more people to use it.
Your thoughts? Do you think it’s cheesy for someone to use a name like that? (I doubt anyone will think twice about people using Anna since it’s such a timeless classic!) Would you personally avoid it?

I LOVE love LOVE Elsa!!! If I didn’t already have an Emma it would be a serious contender for me, and not because of the movie either. I loved it before then.

I think Elsa is super cute, too. It was on my long list prior to the movie, but my husband didn’t like it. I feel the usability factor depends on the name. I couldn’t use a name like Hermoine or Katniss, despite the awesomeness of their characters, because they are unusual names fairly unknown until the books/movies came out. With Elsa, I probably wouldn’t use it on a baby this year, but in a couple years people will have moved on from Frozen and it won’t seem as closely associated with the movie. I noticed this happened with older Disney movies in recent years. Ariel has become popular after the Little Mermaid and Bella (aka Belle) has exploded since Beauty and the Beast. I wouldn’t have used those names when the movies first came out, but now they seem perfectly usable.

if its a rare name like elsa, then people will automatically think you chose it from the movie. like if you used hermione or esme you would get the same reactions. if you love it though, you can use it because it is an actual name that has been around a long time. i think its ridiculous to use names like khaleesi from game of thrones. that is made up from that story. but there are elsas around.

I don’t think it’s cheesy at all. Elsa is such a beautiful name, and it’s not as if it’s unheard of or made up. But (good) characters tend to make me want to use names (e.g. Hermione) because they have such amazing and admirable qualities.
