What are names you want to like but …

    just can’t get behind for some reason?
    Do you know what I mean? Names that appeal to you in some way, but there’s something you can’t put your finger on that makes them seem not quite right? Or names that fit great with your usual style but you just couldn’t bring yourself to use?

    For me, some are:

    * Aurora (with this one I think it’s because it’s pretty and yet a little hard to say)
    * Aurelia
    * Violet
    * Micah
    * Daniel (DH really wanted to use this name after his best friend)

    I love each of these names but for some reason I can’t totally embrace any of them.

    i was wondering if anyone else had names like this. mine are

    henry- like the classicness and that i dont know many henrys but i just dont like it. doesnt sound manly enough.

    amelia- like the classicness and femininity but doesnt sound serious enough

    audrey- like that it ends in the ee sound but doesnt sound nicknamey. but just dont like the sound of it.

    june- my grandmothers name. and i like that its uncommon but i just dont think it sounds pretty. it ends in the oon sound..

    I agree with some of these. I love the idea of Aurora and Aurelia, but they sound too much like aureola to me. Also, I agree that Aurora is hard to say. Strangely, I am still ok with Auralie. I love Audrey, but can only hear Odd-drey. I used to really like Jeremy, but could never use it because it sounds too much like “Germ-y” to me. Also, there are many classic names (esp. boy names) that I love in full, but know they would get shortened automatically and I don’t love the nns (e.g., Benjamin and Matthew).

    I feel the same way about odd-rey and “germy.” :)
    Auralie is in the “names I want to like” category … I think it’s pretty and yet I worry people would think it sounds like “orally.”

    I completely agree with you on Aurora! And @embra, I love some classics in full, but not the nicknames, especially for boys. Other names are:
    Georgiana- I love the George-ee-ah-nuh pronunciation, but the gor-jane-uh one makes me want to cry.
    Benedict/Matthew(Matt)/David/Edward(Ed)- Just couldn’t name a child the same name as one of my major crushes. Tbh, I only really like Benedict, thank goodness for international variations!
    I think that’s about it. There are some names that just remind me of not-very-nice myths (Medea, Icarus, Arachne), or of certain words; Rafe – waif, Eulalie – doolally or bad/annoying characters; Cora, Theophilus.

    I wish I could like Archer because it’s my husband’s favorite but it just sounds too fantasy-like plus I really don’t like Archie.
    I wish I could like Dorothy too because it’s my grandma’s name
    Other names I’m just on the fence about : Anneliese, Amelia, Lilah, Gavin…

    I agree with a few of the classics I prefer in their entirety (James, Matthew, Christopher, William, Nicholas).

    I just can’t get on board with..
    Violet
    Eloise
    Ellery
    Freya
    Penelope
    Josephine

    Atticus
    Asher
    Archer
    Ezra
    Josiah

    TwoSapphires & rylane46 you both mentioned Violet and I’m just curious what’s holding you back? It’s on the top of my list and I can never keep it consistently in the #1 spot, but I’m not sure why :/ The only thing that kind of bothers me is that the spelling is so close to “Violent”

    @lcd1912 that’s it for me; just a little too close to “violent” … and sort of close to “toilet.”

    @rylane46 I feel the same way about Penelope, Atticus and Freya. And Ellery is just too close to celery.

    Idk what it is about Violet that bothers me. I feel like it is a name I should like but I just don’t. I think it is the fact that it is similar to violent and vile. I also find it to be a little abrupt.

    Noah – I like the name but I have worked with so many ill behaved little boys with that name that I could never use it

    I see what you mean about Violet, I’m also nervous bc I love the color purple and make that obvious. I’m nervous people would think I’m taking the color association too far, but my husband and I just honestly like & agree on it. The fact that it’s associated with purple is just a bonus :)

    I do think it’s a really nice name; go for it. :)

    Violet is a pretty name. We actually know one adorable little Violet. It’s one of those names that is familiar enough people won’t think it’s strange, but still not super common. I’m considering for a middle.

    I really like Violet, but I can see where you are coming from. Another name that I love, and actually recommend a fair amount here, but could never use is Levi. Great name, but I can’t get past the jeans.

    I also like Violet…. it does remind me a bit of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (“Violet, your turning violet, Violet!”)

    Poor Violet is still hanging on at #1/#2 despite my concerns haha. A name I hear a lot and, at first, I always swoon is Scarlett. I think it is similar to Violet but even though Violet has more associations working against her I just can’t get past the ”Scar” in Scarlett :/

    I can’t get past the “Scar” in Scarlett, either!
