HELLO, we’re expecting a boy in December and we’re down to two names….Tristan or Sebastian….I like both names, but my husband thinks Tristan sounds too feminine..does anyone out there agree? which name do you all think is better?

Personally, I don’t think Tristan is remotely feminine. Tristan is a very old name for boys. It’s probably best known from the Celtic legend of Tristan and Isolde. They were basically Romeo and Juliet of Ireland/Cornwall centuries before Shakespeare came about.

That being said, sometime in the mid 90s, contemporary users of the name Tristan started to use Tristan on a girl so much that it cracked the top 1000 names for girls in the US. It stayed in the top 1000 girls’ names until about 2002, when it dropped off again. My guess is, this dated use of Tristan on a girl from 10-20 years ago, combined with its similarity to other girly names like Trisha/Tricia, is probably what gives some people the idea that it sounds feminine. I can see why your husband thinks that way. It makes sense to me.

If you feel pretty similar about the names Tristan and Sebastian (so much that it’s the proverbial 6 in one hand, half a dozen in the other) why not go with Sebastian, if it makes your husband more comfortable? Sebastian is a great name!

I don’t have much of a preference myself between the two, and they’re both great names. Do whichever makes both of you the most comfortable! Good luck!

I think you can’t go wrong with either name. Tristan doesn’t sound feminine to me at all, but Sebastian is a great name too.

i like tristan better. its cute and boyish while sebastian sounds more grand and out there. i dont think tristan sounds girly but i can see why he would think that. the girls name kristen used to be popular so it sounds similar. i know some people hesitate on tristan because it sounds like triste which means sad in spanish or french. but it makes me think of the ocean too because it looks like tritan. which is a good thing. some people think of the crab on little mermaid with sebastian but i could get past that association.

Sebastian for sure! I LOVE Sebastian.
I know Tristan has a long history as a boys’ name but I think since the very similar-sounding Kristen for girls has been SO much more popular than Tristan for boys in recent history, people are going to tend to think it does have a feminine sound.

I can’t imagine Tristan on a girl AT ALL. It’s all boy to me! And I like it WAY more than Sebastian. Sebastian’s classy and cool, but to me it will always be that crab from The Little Mermaid…. Tristan is so handsome and it fits in well with name trends these days!!!

I prefer Sebastian. Tristan does have a softer feel to it, although not really “feminine” to me. I also do not care for the related story – Tristan is just not a favorite character of mine, so I would not give his name to my own child.

Sebastian, on the other hand, is a bit “cooler,” if you know what I mean. It is not overly popular, yet fits very well with the trendier names. It’s also easy to shorten, if you like nicknames.

I am not overly fond of either name but I’d pick Sebastian just for the mere fact that I like the nickname Seb. :)

As much as I agree that Tristan is not a feminine name, and how much I like the name for a boy, I do have a female cousin who’s name is Tristyn. I think that Sebastian is a great name, especially if your husband is too worried about Tristan being too feminine.
