The strangest name you've ever heard

I’ve heard a LOT of strange ones over the years, but some are weirder than most. One of the oddest names I ever heard was a little girl named Jealousy Rage. Who does that?

What are some of the strangest choices that you’ve heard?

On the weird historical names front, Abelard and Heloise, star-crossed lovers who lived 1,000 years ago in France, had a son they “Astrolabe”, pronounced “Astrolab”. Doesn’t that sound like it could be one of Frank Zappa’s kids?

I had a teacher growing up named Frank Franco. It’s not that crazy of a name, but WHY would you basically replicate the first and last name? It’s just weird to me.

@Spymama…you have just hit on my biggest naming peeve. John Johnson, James Jameson, Nick Nichols. It seems very repetitive and like parents are simply stumped. Why?

More strange names of people that I know PERSONALLY: A guy that went to a neighboring high school was named Todd Todd. Middle name? Todd. He was a super nice guy. There was a guy in that same school named Pete Moss, he worked at the grocery store in my home town for years.

The saddest name I ever heard of was a little girl named Erotica. I don’t think her parents really knew the true definition of the name.

Interesting note: I know Frank Zappa’s bass player. His children have stunning names…not “out there” at all.

Exactly, Anabel! Couldn’t they be a little more creative?!

I also know someone who named her son Justin Case. Yeah, say it together…

My husband’s older brother has two daughter’s whose names contain bits and pieces
from other names. I mean, really? This brings about the whole “Reneesme” thing.
As for my nieces, I will tell you the spellings are just as atrocious as the names are.
My daughter goes to school with a kid named Ahmal Ahmid. I think that’s a little bit of a repetitive name as well.

Growing up I had a friend named Jennifer John, whose parents wanted a daughter first. Needless to say he was John and his younger sister was named Dylan Jane. She went by Dylan, but her parents wanted a boy that time around. Instead of waiting and finding out the sex, they were willful and chose a name they refused to change when the kids were born. I think girls with boy names are not nearly as bad as boys with girl names….

It’s hard to choose just one. ;)
I once went to a graduation where there was a John John John III. Like it wasn’t bad enough the first time! ;)

I once came across a girl whose name was Summer Breeze, Breeze being the last name.
One of my friends knows a La-a, too. I had always hoped that was just a bad baby names board joke, but alas, people really name their kids that…

You’re going to think that I’m joking, but I’m not. There is a boy in my younger brothers class named:

    Nateatekatickateckataea
    Pronounced: Nah-tea-ah-teck-ah-tick-ah-teck-ah-tay-ah.

He’s African, and goes by Nataea (nah-tay-ah)

    That poor kid!

Wow, Annie! That is quite the name! I’m impressed you remembered the spelling!
Nah-tay-ah has a cool sound to it!

My mom works at the local hospital and hears all sorts of interesting names – a lot of “royal” weirdness, like Jermajesty and “Herhiness”

The strangest I have encountered personally would be Riot. The sound is fine, but it just strikes me as an odd choice for a baby/boy/man. I mean, it’s not fitting at any age.

Bonton Pearl. (for a boy) the parents said they just made it up!
I also went to school with a William Williams. (And here I am worried about starting or ending a fn with the same letter as our last… Haha)

There was a boy in my daughter’s preschool class who was called Dodo (pronounced Doo-doo). She mentioned something about him at home and I had to check with the teacher to make sure she hadn’t unwittingly picked up on some teasing name other children had been calling him (since she clearly wasn’t noticing anything strange about it). Turns out Dodo is his nickname. His full name is something long and foreign that the teachers didn’t remember. The teacher said that so far, the kids hadn’t seemed to notice that his nn basically means pooh. I think that kid’s going to have a rough time in elementary school though.

I’ve also known a Charlie Brown and Adam Apple. I think if I were Charlie, I’d have gone by Charles.

And then of course, there is the former New Hampshire congressman Dick Swett. I would absolutely go by Rick or Rich if I were him, but I guess it probably helped with name recognition. Any press is good press!
