Sister for Stella

My 4 year old, Stella Michelle, is getting a little sister. I told hubby that I was torn between Matilda and Ramona. He is leaning towards Ramona. My only issue is a few people have insisted that they’ll call her Mona which I hate. I’d call her Romy if anything other than Ramona. Hubby isn’t sold on Matilda and my family hates it. This little lady will have a family name as her middle name like Stella does. She’ll be named after her great grandmother and her middle name will be Louise (possibly Eloise). Should I let this sway me or stick to the names I originally loved. Which do you prefer?

I like Ramona better than Matilda. Other names that have the same vibe might be Simone, Sabrina, Sabine, Josephine, Cordelia, Mabel, Rosalind, Winona, or Roxanne.

I’d love to use Ramona. Would it be hard to avoid Mona?

I’m really not a fan of Ramona at all. I’m not big on Matilda but I think Tillie is a really cute nickname.

I actually love Eloise. Would you consider using that for a first name instead? Eloise Matilda or Eloise Ramona would both be really cute.

Stella and Eloise are too rhymey and Eloise is way too popular in our area.

I like Ramona better than Matilda, personally. Just tell people not to call her Mona. Call her Romy if you like, or the full Ramona when you’re around them, and if they use Mona, politely tell them that is NOT her name and you would appreciate it if they’d stop. However, Mona’s a pretty obvious nickname, and I think it may be inevitable as she gets older that her friends may call her it, or she may choose to go by it on her own. If the possibility of your daughter actually wanting to go by Mona is a problem, then I would say just go with Matilda. Or another name. Work with your husband. If you can’t both love one of the names 100%, then keep brainstorming.

My middle name is Louise, and I’ve always rather hated it. It’s a nice name, but I’ve always found it really common and boring. Everyone seems to have a grandmother or great aunt or family friend named Louise. I’ve just never been able to find much to like about it. I like Eloise more, because it’s so much less common as a middle name. And I find it prettier.

I’m not crazy about Matilda but like Romy. One of my girls’ is named Izabelle (I know, really common now) but I hate the name Izzy. I had a few people that initially insisted on calling her that and I just as strongly insisted that they not. They eventually stopped after a few months and call her Belle, which is what she prefers.

i think stella and ramona sound like a great pair. but i dont like ramona. it doesnt sound pretty and cute at all and those characteristics i would want for a daughter. i like matilda. i dont know why they hate it. i think its an underused name. it has an old fashioned feel but i still picture it on a little girl. also i love the nick names milly, tilly or tildy. i think matilda eloise is an awesome combo!

Ramona Eloise is beautiful! I remember really liking the sound of the name in elementary school when we read the Beezus & Ramona series. Maybe because I have never personally known a Ramona, but it doesn’t seem like a name with an obvious nickname to me. My first instinct would be to call her by the full Ramona, not Mona or Romy. Names like Isabella or Elizabeth are longer names with endless possibilities.
I do much prefer Eloise over Louise, gives it a refreshing, modern twist and adds some spunk!
Don’t let a potential nickname deter you!
