Sad and a little confused, help!

Okay, I know I am only on CD 25 (I ovulate at CD10-12) and got my BFP and am just a tad bit super excited… I called to schedule to go in for a pregnancy test at my OB and they won’t see me until I am a week late, Totally Understand…. But then the nurse went on to tell me that even if I tested positive with a FRER yesterday (CD24) that I could be having a chemical pregnancy and still start my period on Friday. WHO SAYS THAT? :( I am so bummed. She said they don’t like those tests because they aren’t accurate and when people take them they measure the hormone when the sperm and egg meet up, not when it implants? Then when they start their period on time women claim they miscarried. Hmmm…. I know I need to be realistic but my day is totally ruined and I’m sad. I’m sorry for complaining. I would love any advice or feedback! <3

The nurse is only partly right and she could have been more diplomatic about it. Home pregnancy tests measure human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in the urine. This is a hormone whose level only increases after implantation (it is created by the cells that become the placenta), so you are most likely pregnant now if you got a positive result. A chemical pregnancy IS a very early miscarriage by definition, however, and they are fairly common. The home pregnancy test is typically accurate when it is positive, but very early pregnancies are precarious. This is true for all of us, but many women don’t know they were pregnant in the first place because they don’t test so early. You still have about a 50-50% chance of having the pregnancy proceed for a first pregnancy, and better odds if this is not your first (which I think it isn’t?) So keep your fingers and toes crossed and wait a week or two, and the miscarriage rate will decrease. Then, around 9-10 weeks once you hear a heart beat, your risk of miscarriage goes way down again. Good luck!

According to my experiences home pregnancy test are perfect but you may not get correct result during early pregnancy.I have also experienced that the smell of urine changes when you are pregnant.Cross your finger and hope for the best.

Wow. What a crappy thing to say! Like pp said, a chemical pregnancy *is* an early miscarriage. HPTs are very accurate in general. Embra covered it well. I hope everything goes smoothly for you. Please keep us posted!

Wow,that was completely unnecessary! She should have just said, we don’t see patients until… And left it at that. Sorry you had that experience.

By the way, I would mention this to the dr when you do go in. They should instruct the nurses not to say things like that and to be more sensitive.

I agree with what Embra said but the nurse could have said it much better.
Have you been to the dr yet?
    Good luck!

Yes! I went to the doc, got my bfp and scheduled my first appt. for Dec 31st. After that whole upset I actually went to that office to get my test, and ended up walking out. The staff was SO RUDE! No surprise after my first encounter with them over the phone. I went to another office that came highly recommended with just as great doctors and their staff was so compassionate and nice. I know my pregnancy hormones can not handle rude and awful women. I want this to be as pleasant as possible knowing it is my last pregnancy.
