I actually think they’re pretty off-base (though I agree about Myrtle, Blanche and several others). In the intro they don’t mention how fashionable vintage names are now, along with the Madisons and other more modern/trendy names. They list Beatrice but I know two little girls under 5 named Beatrice. I’d be curious if they double-checked this list against the SSA list! Eleanor?? That has definitely had a resurgence; I have two nieces named Eleanor (one on each side)! And Rose? It may be less popular than Lily or Violet but it’s still fairly popular, and super popular as a middle name. Josephine is also a lot more popular now than a few decades ago.

I don’t think Ruth will ever go completely out since it’s a Bible name, and I’ve seen Gretchen and Gertrude mentioned in several name posts on baby name message boards. I also know a little girl named Opal.

Oh and sorry about the typo in the post title!

While I agree with about 1/2 of those, the others I don’t agree with at all. Rose, Eleanor, Gretchen, Beatrice, etc are all names I’m seeing used today.

I actually love Beatrice, nn Bea. I have a friend named Gretchen, and it’s not a terrible name, but I also don’t really see it making a comeback.. Eleanor is *adorable*. Rose is still a pretty common middle name.

Jeesh. Maybe the writers of these articles should come to this forum, they would be much more up to date on the names we ladies are favoring today ;)

haha, I definitely disagree with this as well! Names from this I know I’ve seen getting oodles of love over the past couple months:

    Mildred
    Ruth
Agatha (I know a young Agatha, actually! It’s really made it grow on me…)
Beatrice (omgoodness, how could anyone think this was extinct? I hear people talking about it all the time! I’m not a fan at all, but I do love Beatriu and Beatrix. :) )
Gretchen (um, I meet Gretchens all the time!)
    Martha
Rose (erm, speaking of, even Betty! I hear Betty and Betsy tossed around all the time!)
    Eleanor
    Josephine

I wonder where they’re getting this from?! Wow. haha.

LOL yeah, I think she really just made it up. ;)
IMHO Mildred and Agatha should stay in the past (Millie is a cute nn, but maybe short for something else. Millicent maybe? The “dred” is, frankly, dreadful). I know a few Gretchens and it’s OK but I’m not wild about it. One of them told me kids can never pronounce her name correctly. I looove Rose, Eleanor and Josephine though. :)

I was just thinking about Blanche the other day. I actually like something about it. I dont have any relatives with the name, but plenty of characters from novels.

I don’t think any of these names…or any names, really…will ever go extinct. The more people quest in finding something different, the more of these we will see again. I wouldn’t write off anything.

Beatrice- I love this, but Beatrix tops it.
    Ruth- I knew a Ruth.
    Martha- I know two!
Rose- I know a Rose, and a Rosie.
Eleanor- So many people like this name; I know a few Ellies who I think are actually Eleanors.

Some of these aren’t going anywhere, and Anabel has a good point; no name truly disappears…

Ahh Anabel makes a great point!
