Middle Names

Just wondering, where did your middle names come from? How did you choose your children’s middle names? I know some people use family names, others use names they wouldn’t use as first names, and some people just like the other name.

My middle name is Lynn, which is a “filler” middle name, but it was also my mom’s middle name. When we were coming up with names for our daughter, my fiance liked Xochitl, but I knew no one would be able to pronounce it so I said it would be her middle name. Together, her first and middle name mean “beautiful flower”.

We just picked our girls middle names because we liked them and wanted some longer middle names. They are Elizabeth, Carolina and Catherine.

My middle name is Marie, also a “filler name,” but it is my Aunt’s name. It also honors many Mary’s in the family (including my mom who has Mary as her mn). I have to admit it does sound good with just about everything! When I have children I would like to use a family name/honor someone with the middle name, but I am concerned about offending people too.

My middle name is Anne, so it qualifies as a filler name. My family is Catholic and with Catholic tradition being that a child should have a saint’s name as part of their name, it’s also after St. Anne.

My son has a very common first name, Ethan, so we wanted a combo that wasn’t too generic. We also had a hard time finding anything we both liked that sounded right in the middle. He ended up Ethan Xavier.

With my daughter still in-utero, I just loved Juliet but didn’t want to use it as a first name. We were also going for a non-generic combo, so she’s going to be Claire Juliet.

My MN is Marie (very filler, and chosen for filler reasons!), but it’s also the middle name of two of my great aunts. My brother is a III, so he shares my dad’s MN; my little sisters have the MNs Eileen and Ruth–one because it sort of resembles my grandma’s FN (Arlene) and the other because it is my nana’s FN (Ruth).

I want tons of significance for my kids (both family and just stuff I really appreciate/love), so I have one family name in each combo, and generally another MN that has something meaningful to me:

Isabelle Aurora Grace (Grace is a family name; Aurora meaning “dawn” to represent the idea of new beginnings)
Arianne Eleanor Kate/Arianne Eleanor Daisy (Eleanor for Elinor Dashwood, and Kate/Daisy both for my mom)
Olivia Wren Camille (Wren for my mom and grandma; Camille for Camille Saint-Saens, since I’m a huge piano/classical music geek)
Violet Ophelia Claire (Ophelia for Shakespeare; Claire for my dad and brother–Claire means the same thing as their middle, Robert)
Catherine Lydia Eve (Lydia for Jane Austen, and the first European Christian believer, and Catherine for my mom and great-grandma. I just love Eve as a middle)
Lillian Charlotte Eve (just love Eve; Lillian for my nana; Charlotte for Charlotte Bronte; the nn Lily for my mom)
Emmeline Poppy ____ (Poppy for my dad, mom, brother, and grandpa; I also love the symbolism with military veterans. Don’t have a second middle yet)
Tess Penelope Kate (Penelope from The Odyssey; Kate for my mom)
Eva Madelief Claire (Claire for my dad/brother; Madelief for my interest in Europe and the tie to my mom)

Caleb Elias Joseph (Joseph honors my sister in aroundabout way; Elias for Elijah, one of my favorite Bible characters)
Everett Joshua Charles (Charles for my mom; Joshua for Jesus)
Jack August Cole (Jack for my dad and brother; August for a TV character I love. I generally don’t honor movie/TV characters–unless it’s already a classic novel–but I count Auggie Anderson of Covert Affairs to be an exception)
Samuel Gaspard John (Gaspard for my best friend and little sister; John for my dad and brother)
Eleanor Lila Grace (just love Lila; Eleanor for Elinor Dashwood; Grace for my grandma)
Eleni Charlotte Jane (Jane for my dad and brother; Charlotte for Charlotte Bronte; just love Eleni, and it also honors my little sister)

    etc., etc. :)

William’s middle name is Gabriel. I have loved the name Gabriel for years and wanted to use it. However, one of my closest friends had a miscarriage and called the baby Gabriel. To honor her and her little one lost, I decided not to use it as a first name after all but used it as a middle name instead.

Alexander’s MN is Emmanuel. DH’s father, oldest brother and grandfather are all named Manuel, the Portuguese version. We decided to go with the Hebrew version for various reasons but the name is in honor of them, especially BIL.

Oh and my own middle name is after my grandmother. My mom and I both have her FN as our MN. My older brother and my dad share a middle name. My older sister has our other grandma’s name as her middle name. And my younger sister’s MN is Marie, which is in honor of both my mom’s FN and a family friend.

Wow it seems a lot of us have filler middle names!

@yellowwatts: I like how your daughter’s names sound with short first names and longer middle names. Most people I know have long first names and filler middle names.

@lcd: I understand how hard it must be to try to not leave someone out. Especially when there are two sides of the family to choose names from.

@Inga: I like how Ethan Xavier and Claire Juliet sound.

@ash: Wow you are all prepared for when you have kids! Hopefully you can get your SO at the time to agree.

@Twosapphires: I like your boys’ names also. I had a strange dream when I was pregnant that I had a boy named Emmanuel.

My middle name is Jean, same as my mother, her mother and her mother before that. Might be a ‘filler’ name but it’s very special to me!

My son’s middle name is Andrew, which is my dad’s middle name :)
