I just met someone with this name, and it intrigues me. It wouldn’t work with our LN, but I’m curious what you all think of it. Would you like to meet a boy named Magnus? What would you imagine a Magnus to be like?

For some reason I like it, but I think I would be leery of using it. When my dh and I have considered it (we have 2 girls, so it’s never been a real possibility) we’ve put it in the mn spot. In the last couple of years a few celebs have named their boys Magnus.

Interesting; I didn’t remember that celebs had used it but I could see that. :)

It makes me think of alcoholic beverages for some reason. Are large bottles called Magnus or something like that maybe?

It reminds me of the father in Matilda, his name was Magnus. I think it’s sweet and it is making a comeback. But, I’d be a little weary of using it as a first name. Perhaps a middle.

I’m not a fan at all. Not to be stereotypical, but I imagine a little Magnus to be kinda rough and tumble and gets in trouble a lot.

Like FelicityElle, I immediately thought of the teacher’s father in Matilda. I grew up with that movie, so it stuck with me pretty well. There’s one scene where the group of kids are reading in a rather chanty, meant-to-freak-someone-out way as “possessed” chalk writes on the blackboard “This….is….Magnus”. So that’s my image of the name. I’ve never really encountered it outside of that movie. It does also kind of make me think of that brand of ice cream bars. I think they’re Magnum, but close enough…. I don’t think I’d use it. It seems a bit too grand to me.

    Mmm, Magnums are tasty. :)
I agree, it seems pretty grand to me, too, but it’s interesting and I could definitely see it getting more popular.
@yellowwatts, that’s interesting; to me it has more of an intellectual vibe, not rough-and-tumble at all!

I love Magnus! Yeah, it’s a pretty big celeb hit, but I still think it’s a great name. It reminds me of a Scandinavian guy, strong and stoic and kind in his gruff sort of way. I can see him being a soccer player, too, haha, and having a thick accent, but behind all of everything, he’s definitely kind and intelligent!

I know of someone who has a little Leo Magnus, and I think that’s brilliant! I would love to meet a little Magnus. I think you could get away with Max as a nn, too, if it feels like too much name.

Magnus is pretty common in Denmark and I really don’t like it. That said the Danish pronuncation is in my opinion cuter than the English (ma-oo-nus).
