Lucia, Lucia, Lucia!

Let’s talk about Lucia. :) I’m really loving it lately, what with the Christmas season in full force and thoughts of St. Lucia and Jesus, the light of the world.

I’m saying it LOO-shah, and I love the nn Lou or Lulu. If you met a Lucia “LOO-shah” (or even loo-CHEE-ah, my second favorite pronunciation–and the Italian one!)–would you instinctively nn her Lucy? I’ve never been a Lucy fan (sorry, Lucy lovers!), and would like to avoid it, but I do really love Lucia (and Lou/Lulu!).

Combo ideas? What would you pair with it? Anything I can think of, I’m not terribly fond of. Lucia Madeleine or Lucia Charlotte are about the closest I can get to something I genuinely like, but I’m not swooning over either of them…

    Thanks, ladies!

With the LOO-shah pronunciation, I would not instinctively call her Lucy. I do like the name, though my pronunciation preferences are opposite yours, since to me lu-SEE-yah sounds the prettiest and I’m not as drawn to the other two options. I think Lulu is a really cute nn.
Combo ideas … I wouldn’t do Lucia Charlotte because of the two “sh” sounds so close to each other, but I do really like Lucia Madeleine. Or … hmm … Lucia Anneliese?

I don’t think, pronounced LOO-shah, I would instinctively think Lucy. Though I’ve really only ever heard it actually said loo-SEE-yah, outside of this site, which I like a lot better and I think is more instinctive, but definitely would lead straight to Lucy. But, like, I think if someone sees the name written, they may still be inclined to nickname her Lucy. It’s a pretty natural shortened version… But, if you called her Lou or Lulu, I think people would just go with that over Lucy….

I’m with TwoSapphires, Lucia Charlotte is too repetitive. But Lucia Madeliene would be really pretty! Or maybe Lucia Anastasia? Lucia Alexandra?

If I saw it in writing, I would pronounce it LOO-shah. Also I tend to call people by whatever name they used to introduce themselves, so I wouldn’t go automatically to Lucy. Luch-EE-a would be my second guess. Loo-SEE-yah didn’t even cross my mind until I read the other responses here, although now I can definitely see how that would be a reasonable pronunciation.

My second middle name is Lucia (although I pronounce it as Loo-see-ah) after St. Lucia, and I think it is a wonderful name with any of the pronunciations. If you don’t want to deal with the nn Lucy, then the Loo-shah pronunciation is definitely the way to go. I actually know a little Lucia who goes by Louie and I think it’s precious! Lucia Madeleine is a great combo. Some other names that could work are Lucia Violet, Lucia Matilda, Lucia Sophia, Lucia Eloise, or Lucia Eleanor

My cousin’s name is Lucia and we call her Lulu. I’d rather call her Lucy honestly, but it’s not up to me :)

Lucia totally rocks! We pronounce it Loo-see-uh since her Mummy is Italiano. I really love it paired with longer names.

I instinctively pronounce the name Loo-SEE-yah, and that does make me think of Lucy. But pronouncing it LOO-sha really doesn’t lol

I think Lucia Madeleine or Lucia Gabrielle are nice :)

@EnglishLily – what?! I’d always been told loo-CHEE-ah was the Italian pronunciation. Not once have I heard that the Italian form was said like the Spanish loo-SEE-ah. (Consider my mind blown!)

I’m really loving Lucia Charlotte Eve, Lucia Madeleine [something], or just using it as a middle name for Charlotte (Charlotte Lucia Eve, nn Lottie or Lola). Thoughts? Which is your favorite? If I use Lucia Charlotte, I’d probably use the loo-CHEE-ah pronunciation. Maybe. Although I do like LOO-shah more lately, so I’m not sure.
