Jeremiah?

DH just threw out the name Jeremiah. I like it. I’m not sure I’d use it since a close friend has a Jeremiah but since she’s a few thousand miles away, it might be OK. :)
What are your thoughts on this name?

Meh. I’ve always liked Jeremy more. The Jeremiahs I’ve known in the past all seemed to be rather low-class or hillbilly-ish, so I just feel like it’s not a terribly flattering name. Plus, the Jeremiah I know the best goes by the nn Miah (which sounds like Maya), which sounds sort of feminine to me. I don’t think Miah is guaranteed or anything–I’ve known a Jeremiah nn Jere (JARE), and I’ve heard Remy tossed about as a nn for Jeremiah/Jeremy, which I think is rather cool, too. :) Jeremiah has grown on me over the years, though, and I don’t really dislike it. I just like other Biblical -ah boys names more. I would be quite happy to meet a Jeremiah “Remy”, though. :)

I’m with Ash, I like Jeremy way more, and I see Jeremiah as one of those biblical names that the those stereotypical hillbillies use. I find it way less classy than other traditional biblical names. I want to like it, because it’s a pretty cool name just on it’s own, but it is one of the first names I think of when I think of those crazy conservative rednecks who give Christians a bad name….

    I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it.

I like it fine. I don’t know any Jeremiahs, so I don’t have hillbilly connections in my head, but I can’t see the name without shouting, “Was a bullfrog! Was a good friend of mine!”

besides the bible and bullfrog connections made above I also think of 19kids & counting…none are terribly bad references I guess. Micah kind of reminds me of it, but much more modern and handsome?

Thanks for the responses. Interesting! My own associations with Jeremiah based on the few I’ve known are a lot more positive. ;) But it’s good to know what others think.

Oh, and to me Jeremy sounds very 70s/80s and I grew up with a bratty one so it’s not a name I would consider. ;) My mom would be thrilled though since if she’d had a second boy I know she would have named him Jeremy.

It’s ok but I much prefer Josiah. :)

I actually really prefer Josiah, too! :) I suggested it when we were naming the boys but DH nixed it for some reason.

Try him again with it! I like the combo Josiah Thomas.
