Elijah vs Isaac

Which is your favorite between the two?
I thought H was definite on Elijah if we have another boy but I found out he is still open to Isaac, too.

I like both, but I really like Isaac. Elijah/Eli has been very very popular here for years so I think I’m a little tired of it. I’ve never met an Isaac (although I know they are out there), so it seems more fresh to me.

I like Isaac better with your boys. :) I think Elliot would fit better with William and Alexander, so while I love Elijah, Isaac gets my vote instead. I think either is pretty great, though! I would just be happier to meet an Isaac. Although I see an Isaac and an Elijah on a fairly regular basis, and I have to say, I love both boys pretty equally. They’re both great names! :)

We have several of both at my church. (We’ve got about 900 people so there are multiples of most names. ;) We even have multiple Tristans! ;) ) I like Isaac a bit better; DH likes Elijah a bit better. To me the popularity difference helps give Isaac the edge but we’ll see. Thanks so much for the input!

Wow, 900?! No wonder there’s such variation in the names in the nursery every time you talk about that. haha. My church is lucky if we get 100 anymore. :( Do you prefer either Bible character? I absolutely LOVE the story of Elijah, but I love the sentiment behind Isaac’s name, as well. It means “laughter”–how cool is that? Maybe poll the boys and see if they prefer one? Although, doesn’t one of your boys love Isaac?

I’m not a huge fan of either, really, but I like Elijah much more than Isaac. I’ve known too many Isaacs and I know for a fact that people will call them eye-sick, with the connotation of them being an eye-sore, or I-sick, like they are somehow ill or disgusting. I know it’s a pretty popular name, but I’ve really never known one and not heard those jokes get made eventually.

Ash: Good memory. :) They have a good friend named Isaac (older brother of one of their peers so of course he’s a cool older kid and they both look up to him ;) ). And yeah, our church has tripled in size in the last 4 years since we moved into our own building; hard to keep up with!
TWS: That’s interesting! I know a bunch of Isaacs and haven’t heard those jokes made but I might not hang out with them enough to know.

Eliyahu versus Yitzchak…I definitely prefer the Elijah character to Isaac, I think I like the sound better, and I also like the meaning of Elijah more than Isaac. The only thing I would like Isaac for more is that it’s not nearly as common as Elijah has become. If you have an Isaac, though, can I call him Itzi? I think it’s a pretty fun nickname.

they are both great names. ill say isaac because i try to stay away from the real biblical names ending in ah. although i really like isaiah.

NMteacher, that’s what has me leaning toward Isaac, too. I personally like the sound of Isaac better. Elijah definitely gets better points for the Bible character though! Meaning, too. :) I had never heard the nn Itzi … I might OK that. ;) I like it better than Ike!

    Itzi is a Jewish nickname.

Also, I think Will, Alex, and Isaac sounds better than Will, Alex, and Elijah.

    I do too.
I think DH would lean toward mostly calling an Elijah “Eli.”

I like Isaac. I knew a very cool Isaac who really wore the name well. It will always have special meaning to me. I am a bigger fan of the Biblical Isaac over Elijah as well, although they were both great and interesting :-)
