Briar

Recently I’ve been pondering about using Briar as a boys name. I first came across it as a boys name and find it quite masculine. However, I am aware it is a type of rose and is traditionally a girls name. Would Briar with a masculine middle name work for a boy?

    Combinations I like:

    Briar Henry
    Briar Samuel
    Briar James
    Briar Alexander
    Briar Axel
    Briar Charles
    Briar Michael

I really prefer it on a girl, in a GP kinda way. I’m curious to see what others say about using it on a boy. I guess you could use Bri (long I ending) as a nickname. My nephew’s name is Bryant and they call him Bry. I like all of your combos above except Axel.

I’m sorry; I can’t really picture it on a boy. Maybe if you spelled it Breyer, like the surname?

Oh yea like the ice cream too! Breyer looks more masculine.

I agree that Breyer seems much more masculine, but ha, I can’t stop craving ice cream. :)

I know of a family who has a little boy named Bryar (this spelling), and that seems slightly more masculine to me. I just see Briar and think of the Disney princess. I came across the combo Charlotte Briar a while ago and I thought it was the most quirky, beautiful thing, and I find it hard to see Briar on a boy now, too. I do sort of like Briar Samuel and Briar Alexander, though.

Ice cream? I’m in the UK so I assume it’s an American brand!

Thank you for the feed back. I shall definitely consider Bryar as an alternative. Breyer doesn’t look right to me.

I agree, I’d go with Breyer/Bryer. Briar is 100% a girls’ name for me, and I love it on a girl, so I’d be kind of disappointed to see it on a boy…

Yeah, I’m guessing it’s American. :) It’s a pretty popular ice cream brand here, and a surname.

Oh my goodness! When TheWishingStar said Bryer, it totally jogged my memory! I went to high school with a boy named Bryer!

I agree with the consensus. Briar is all girl to me, Bryar/Bryer would be preferable on a boy.

I think it is very handsome! I met a little boy Briar the other day and fell in love with his name!

I do not like it as a boy’s name, no matter what kry8tiv spellings are used.
