Hi everyone. I am only 11 weeks pregnant, so I don’t know yet if I’m having a boy or a girl, but my boyfriend and I have been talking about names already. We have the middle name picked out for a girl already, Xochitl, which means “flower” in the Aztec language of Nahuatl. (My boyfriend is Mexican). We narrowed the first names down to 3 we both like: Kiana, Kiany, or Nayeli.
I had a harder time coming up with names for boys, so I had him sit down with me and think of names. We agreed on: Cenon (after his grandfather), Israel, Javier, Joel, Jonathan, Julian, Leandro, Luis, and Ricardo. I probably won’t use Jonathan or Luis as first names because they are really common names. What do you guys think of these names? The last name is Escalona.

I really like Kiana the best of your girls’ names, and Joel, Jonathan or Leandro the best of your boy options.

i knew a girl named xochitl. she pronounced it so-chee. because people have trouble with the tl part. although i dont think its that hard. it has a wonderful meaning. kiana is nice. i dont like the spelling of kiany. it looks wrong. id make it kiani which is also a nice name. i think kiana xochitl or kiani xochitl would be a cool combo. i prefer kiara to kiana though. nayeli is ok too. of your boy names, i like javier, cenon, joel and julian

Love Kiana for girls! Nayeli’s nice too. For boys I love Julian! Luis, Joel, or Jonathan would be nice too.
    How is Xochitl pronounced?

The way my boyfriend pronounces Xochitl is like SHO-CHEE-CL. The “tl” is hard to pronounce for people who don’t speak Nahuatl. The name Cenon (his grandfather’s name) is pronounced with a long O sound, SAY-NON. Thanks for your opinions.

I was wondering how those two were pronounced! Thanks for filling us in. :)

He wanted to use Xochitl for the first name, but I knew her teachers would never be able to pronounce it, so I said we could use it for the middle name. My boyfriend’s family is Aztec, so they can pronounce it.

I think that I like Kiana, Javier, and Ricardo best with your last name.

Does anyone have any suggestions for combinations of the boys names? What middle names could go with Cenon?

    Cenon Luis?
    Cenon Ricardo?

We have finally decided on the names! Now we just have to wait and see if its a boy or a girl.
    Girl: Nohemi Xochitl Escalona
Nohemi is the Spanish form of Naomi and means “beautiful, pleasant”. Xochitl means “flower” in the Aztec language.
    Boy: Cenon Luis Escalona
Cenon is the name of my boyfriend’s grandfather who passed away. We both liked Luis, but it was too common for a first name.

*Question: How should I spell Nohemi? On different websites I’ve seen it spelled Nohemi/Noemi/Nohemy.

Congratulations on finding a names you like! Nohemi is a beautiful name. Of the three options you listed, I like Noemi best (no-AY-mee, right?). I think it will be most intuitive to non-Spanish speakers who may want to pronounce the H in the other two options (as no-HEM-ee).

I agree with embra, if the H isn’t pronounced, leaving it out might be best, as it’s an unusual enough names that English speakers will read it phonetically. Is it no-AY-mee? I would have guessed no-EH-mee. Either way, though, I think Noemi would be the easiest, and it’s more similar to Naomi, which I think makes it make sense.

I agree that I would go with Noemi. Pretty name!
