Asrieal or Arya for my baby girl?

My husband and I just found out we are having a baby girl in May! We have an 18 month old little boy named Tristan and we love his name to bits…. But we are finding that we love both of these names for our little girl. Any thoughts? Asrieal is normally a boys name spelled Asriel and pronounced “As-re-ell” and Arya is usually spelled Aria and pronounced “Are-re-ah”. We are not hung up on meanings, and know the history of each so that’s not an issue, we just want to know if anyone else finds these names as striking as we do! :)

I really like Arya! The spelling with the Y has always looked better to me. Asrieal seems like a misspelling to me, I would stick with the Asriel spelling if you wanted to use it. I personally think that either way the name is a bit out of place with Tristan, but Tristan and Arya sounds like a really great sibset!!

Thank you for your response. I’m not married to the spelling, I even considered the Hebrew spelling “Azrael” and I think I agree that Asriel is the better of the first 2 spellings. I’m gla that you like Arya, that was out first choice, and would have been Tristan’s name had he been a girl :). I never really thought about “sibset” before. I don’t think that is an issue for me either but it’s good to hear feedback!

Arya is pretty, although I prefer the Aria spelling. I think at quick glance, Arya might get called by the more common Anya a lot by people reading her name. My only mental connection with Asrieal is as Azrael – the evil (male) cat from the Smurfs show, so I don’t love it for a little girl.

Of the two, I’d pick Arya but I’m not really fond of it.

I really like Aria. Arya is way too close to Aryan IMO.

asrieal is confusing to spell. and it looks like a weird spin off on israel. i much prefer aria but only wiht this spelling. it looks prettier than arya. i think tristan and aria would be a fabulous combo.

I grew up with the Smurfs so Asrieal just makes me think of the cat. I can’t picture it on a girl.

Aria is better, but the spelling Arya is confusing to me as it looks like it should be pronounced “are-ya”. My only issue with Aria is it’s potential teasing factor due to it’s likeness to the word diarrhea.

I would either use the original spelling of Azreal, or I wouldn’t use it at all. I also don’t see the name as feminine at all, and don’t know of many girls with the name. I do know of it being used for boys, though. Arya is a nice name, but it is super trendy right now due to its association with Game of Thrones. If that doesn’t bother you, then fine, but I thought it might be good for you to know. There are tons of baby girls being named Aria and Arya right now.

Have you considered the name Azaria? It is sort of like both of these names. I thought about it instantly upon reading the title of this post. I think its a lot cooler than using Azrael for a girl or changing its spelling in attempts to make it seem feminine, and it is loads less trendy than Arya. Just thought I’d mention it as you might not have thought of it before! It pairs very nicely with the classic name your son has, Tristan.
