Acheron?

I’ve posted about this in the past, so some of you may remember, but I’ve adored the name Acheron (ack-uh-ron), with the nickname Ash, for a while now, but I’d sort of half-convinced myself it was too weird and have been trying to get myself to love other names that could have Ash as a nickname instead (I kind of hate both Asher and Ashton, though, so that’s not going well).

But I recently learned that one of my friends has a little cousin named Acheron, and hearing it actually used on a real person instead of online or on a fictional character made me super excited and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. And hearing someone other than me saying it out loud! So now I’m in love with the name all over again.

What do you guys think? My favorite combination for it right now is Acheron James; what do you think of that? Other suggestions?
Still kind of too weird/unusual/hard to pronounce or spell? Or do you think it could be okay? Does having a pretty not-bizarre nickname help? What about other ideas to get the nickname Ash?

I think it is usable, and I like it. It may be more practical in the middle name spot, but if you love it, make it a first name.

    Ashley
Ashan – I know a boy by this name and I think it’s quite cute. Very uncommon, but easy to pronounce and spell. Best of both worlds. :)
    Ashcroft
    Ashburn
    Ashbourne
Ashford – I also like this a lot!

I agree-it’s totally usable and I’d like to meet one! It kind of reminds me of Archer actually. I love James with anything, so I definitely approve of the combo! The only thing I’m not sure of is the nn “Ash” If it is prn like Ack. I’d be more likely to use Ronnie, Ace or Axe? If the nn Ash is really what you like and would refer to him as anyway then I like some of the above suggestions (particularly Ashford(e), Cash & Nash). Kids usually develop their own nicknames regardless..

I may be the odd one out, but I don’t really think it’s all that usable in the first name spot. People will look at it and say “Ache-Ron?” I’m also not sure the nn “Ash” is intuitive if it’s actually pronounced “ack.” I do like Archer or maybe Ashford as an alternative. I agree that if it’s really the “Ash” you like, I’d go with another name. Could you even go with Ashe as a FN? (Since it’s a LN and would fit with the LN as FN trend.)

I’m with TwoSapphires. I would have no idea how to pronounce Acheron without being told and it makes me think of Akron, Ohio. I also don’t think the nickname Ash would be obvious since there is no “ash” sound in Acheron. I’d much prefer straight up Ashe.

I like Ash and Acheron independently of each other, but I don’t like the idea of just Ash not as a nickname, and I feel like Acheron would almost need a nickname, since it’s quite a mouthful. Either can work on its own, which is kind of why I wish I liked other Ash- names, but I don’t think it’s the most complicated nickname possible? (I first came across the name Acheron in a book series in which the character Acheron does go by Ash, though, so I’m probably a little biased in thinking that it’s really not that much of a stretch…)
The reason I like Acheron for the nickname Ash so much, even though it’s not quite intuitive, is that I really just don’t like any other Ash names. I really don’t like most surname-y names as first names at all, so ones like Ashe, Ashford, Ashborn, Ashcroft I would just never be able to use.

I agree with your initial hunch that it’s a little too odd/unusual/confusing to use, though as you can see from this thread there are mixed opinions on that. :) Are there other names you like or is your heart set on this one?

I don’t know, I had my heart set on it for like a month years ago, and I keep floating back to it. But I’m not pregnant or planning to be anytime soon, so I’m not too worried. It was just on my mind again, so I figured it’d be worth asking. :)

    Thanks, though, everyone!

I’m not a fan. Asher James would be super cute though!
