Predominantly male but occasionally used as a female name, Tautoru is the name for the group of stars known as Orion's Belt in English. In Maori myth Tautoru was a great bird hunter who wanted his brother Mataora's wife. This lead to Mataora hurting his wife and his wife running away from him before being eventually reunited.

Tautoru was often used for a child with a father known for his ability at hunting or for a child born when Tautoru was at its peak in the sky or setting.
