  • Additional Info:
In Indian mythology Saranyu was the wife of Vivasvant and the mother of twins known as the Aśvins (derived from 'aśra', 'horse'). Growing unable to bear Vivasvant she ran away in the shape of a mare, leaving behind an image of herself with whom her husband lived. However, when he uncovered her trickery he turned himself into a stallion, gave chase and begat the Aśvins.

Such twins appear throughout Indo-European mythology - ancient Greek mythology had the Dioskouroi, twin brothers of Helen of Troy, and the Anglo-Saxons had Hengist and Horsa.
