The best-known Sapphira in literature is probably the New Testament figure Sapphira, wife of Ananias. Sapphira and Ananias were members of the early Christian church in Jerusalem. The church had decided to share all of their worldly goods with each other as common property and some members sold various land holdings and donated the money to the church. Ananias and Sapphira sold their land for the church, but kept back some of the profit for themselves; when Ananias presented the money to the church, he claimed it was the full amount. Ananias was struck down for lying about his gift; later, Sapphira, not knowing what had happened, also lied about the money and was also struck down.
