    From an Iranian book of epic poems, the Shahnameh. Rudābeh is a princess of Kabul who married a Zāl, a man who her parents and priests originally believed was not suitable for her. Rudābeh then gave birth to Rostam who would become a great hero of Iran.

    When Rudābeh and Zāl first met she was in a tower and offered to throw down her hair for him to climb up. It has been suggested that this was the origin of the story of Rapunzel.

    There are three possible origins for Rudābeh. The first is shining child, coming from rood or rauta meaning child and ab meaning shining. Another is a literal meaning of she of the river water and the third is from Rao'a, meaning growth and giving the full name the meaning possessing bright growth.
