The "spirit" or "soul", derived from the Greek for "to breathe". The tale of Eros and Psyche first appeared as a digressionary story told by an old woman in the Latin novel "The Golden Ass". In this tale Psyche is a young girl of admirable beauty who is unfortunately subject to the jealousy of the goddess Aphrodite. The goddess sends her son Eros [Cupid, Amor] to Earth to make Psyche fall in love with the ugliest living man but the young god falls in love with her himself. She was united with him after Aphrodite's jealousy was overcome, granted immortality and bore a daughter ("Volupta", which translates to bliss, delight or pleasure). Psyche became the personification of the soul.
