Additional info: |
Orpheus was a poet and musician in Greek mythology who travelled to the Hades to retrieve his beloved dead wife Eurydice.
Several etymologies for the name Orpheus have been proposed. A probable suggestion is that it is derived from a hypothetical verb *orbhao-, "to be deprived". It might be related to Greek orphe, "darkness", and Greek orphanos, "fatherless, orphan", from which comes English "orphan" by way of Latin. |
