Morrígan or Morrígu is the Old Irish name of an ancient Irish goddess of battle, strife, and fertility. The etymology of the name is uncertain. The first part was cognate with the Old English maere, a word which has survived into Modern English as part of "nightmare." The second part, rígan, is Old Irish for "queen." It might also be a from the Gaelic 'Mhór Rioghain' meaning "great queen".
Her name thus translates as either "Great Queen" or "Phantom Queen," and both epithets are entirely appropriate for her. The Morrigan appears as both a single goddess and a trio of goddesses. She is usually seen as a terrifying figure. She is associated with war and death on the battlefield, sometime appearing in the form of a carrion crow, premonitions of doom, and with cattle.
