Goethe used Mignon as the name of a female character of his novel "Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre'". The opera "Mignon" was later composed by French composer Ambroise Thomas, based on Goethe's story.
It has occasionally been used in English-speaking country.

It is not a French first name but the masculine adjective for "cute".

Historically, mignon also took the meaning of "favorite" when referring to "les mignons du roi", a derogatory term used in the 15th century to designate the male favourites of the kings of France. In the 19th and 20th century, the word acquired homosexual connotations. The term was more particularly used to refer to the favourites of King Henry III (1551-1589). Henry III had however no known male lovers, and on the contrary he had several famous female lovers.
