Miscellaneous Info for Megapenthes

  • Additional Info:
This ancient Greek name comes from the words 'mega' (big, great) and 'penthos' (sorrow, grief). In ancient Greek mythology Megapenthes was the twin brother of Nicostratus. The twins were the illegitimate offspring of King Menelaus of Sparta (husband of Helen of Troy) and a slave girl called Pieris. The 'great sorrow' referred to in the name is that of Menelaus (mythological children are sometimes named for 'qualities' of their fathers - cf Astyanax, son of Hector).
