A Roman praenomen (given name) with Etruscan origins; the original Latin form of Mark.
Marcus was probably derived from the name of the Roman god of war Mars, or the adjective 'mas' meaning "male, virile". Hence the meaning "from Mars", "from the god Mars".
Marcus was Cicero's first name. Another famous Roman bearer is the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, in the 2nd century. The name was also borne by a pope.
Marcus Brutus was one of the leading conspirators who intend to kill Julius Caesar. Shakespeare chronicled this in his play "Julius Caesar".
