Marah is Biblical place name, as well as a variant of Mara, another name of the Biblical figure Naomi.
In the Bible, Mara was the name of a place that the Israelites visited briefly after their Exodus from Egypt, after the Red Sea crossing. At their sixth station in the wilderness, they came upon a fountain, but the water was so bitter that no one could drink of it. Divinely directed, Moses cast a certain tree into the water, which took away its bitterness. |
