Lavender is an aromatic purple flowering herb, characteristic of Mediterranean climates. The origin of the name "Lavender" is uncertain. It could be from the Latin 'lavendula' through the Old French 'lavendre', a term which was used to denote the herb.
Roald Dahl used the name for a friend of Matilda's in his 'Matilda'.
