Kunala (or sometimes referred to as Kunal, the modern version of the name) was the son of 3 rd century Emperor Ashoka and Queen Padmavati. As Ashoka's heir, he was destined to inherit the Mauryan Empire, which made up most of the Indian subcontinent at the time. He was blinded in a fit of jealousy by one of Ashoka's many wives, and therefore, could not take the throne. His son became the successor.
