Additional info: |
Kaya is likely an elaboration of the name Kay, or a variant of the names Kaja or Kaia. It is not a Native American name meaning "elder sister," as is often claimed. It was used as a name for an "American Girl" character in 2002, but in this case it was short for "Kaya' aton' my," a Nez Perce name meaning "girl who arranges rocks." Linguists Orrin Lewis and Laura Redish provide a good analysis of this name and many others as part of their site www.native-languages.org .
As a Japanese first name, Kaya may be written with the characters "excellent; good; pleasing" (ka) and "plains; field" (ya). Other combinations of characters include "excellent; good" with "all the more; increasingly". |
