Julius Caesar was a Roman general and politician. His assassination was fictionalised in Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar'. He was of the gens or clan of Julia, and so Julius was passed on to his nephew, the emperor Augustus, who was the founder of the Julio-Claudian dynasty of Roman emperors.
