    In Greek mythology, Ismene was a daughter of Oedipus and sister of Antigone. She appears in several plays of Sophocles including "Antigone", at the end of "Oedipus the King" and to a limited extent in "Oedipus at Colonus". She also appears at the end of Aeschylus' "Seven Against Thebes".

    In Sophocles' 5th century "Antigone", she requested to be buried alive with her sister to share Antigone's blame despite having refused to take part in Antigone's rebellion.

    The name itself may be derived from the Ancient Greek 'isme' meaning "knowledge".
