Innogen or Inogen was most likely derived from Inghean, a Gaelic term for maiden or daughter, and was the name of a legendary Celtic character. It was used as the name for a character in Shakespeare's play Cymbeline, but was misprinted as Imogen, possibly due to someone thinking it referred to the last born ('imo gens' in Latin). It is the Imogen form which has passed into modern use. |
