    Gawain was the name of the one of the knights of the Round Table in the Arthurian legends. In the story 'Gawain and the Green Knight', Gawain accepts the challenge of the 'Green Knight' to behead the knight, in return for the knight doing the same in a year and a day. Gawain, thinking it to be an easy and a safe challenge, does so, only for the headless knight to pick up his head and tell Gawain to meet him at the set time. Gawain later meets the Green Knight who reveals that the challenge and the adventures that Gawain had during that year, were part of a game arranged by Morgan le Fay.
