Ervin is a variant of the surname Irvine, which has three separate origins. It can be from one of two places in Scotland, either Irvine or Irving. Both places are named for a Celtic river whose name probably meant 'green water'. It can also be derived from one of the Middle English names Irwyn, Erwyn or Everwyn, which are composed of Old English elements meaning 'wild boar' and 'friend'. Thirdly, Irvine can be an anglicization of the Irish Gaelic surname Ó hEireamhóin, meaning 'descendant of Eireamhón' (it is uncertain what Eireamhón means).
