From the Anglo-Saxon eád-gyth, with 'eád' meaning 'good, prosperity, fortune, inheritance' and 'gyth' meaning 'battle' or 'strife'. Another possible meaning is 'warrior for the good'. Eadgyth was the name of the daughter of King Edgar (see Edgar). She is considered by some to be a saint.
English King Edward the Confessor and his successor Harold II Godwinson married women called Edith. Edward the Confessor's wife was the sister of Harold Godwinson.
Other famous Ediths include French singer Edith Piaf, novelist Edith Wharton and Andy Warhol's muse Edith (or Edie) Sedgwick. Edith Cavell was an English nurse during World War One, who was captured and court-martialled by the Germans. Her death was used as propaganda by the English government.
