Chloris is a personification of the spring and is the goddess of the flowers. Her Roman counterpart is Flora. It was the name of the wife of the windgod Zephyros and a nickname of Meliboia, daughter of Niobe. It was said she turned dreadfully pale when Apollo and Artemis killed all her mothers children except for her and one of her brothers (note that Niobe had seven daughters and seven sons according to the legend).
Horace used the name in his poetry and in the seventeenth and eighteenth century the name was in use for males and so regained some of its popularity.
