Camilla was the name of a legendary female warrior who chose to fight against Aeneas when he landed in Italy, and was killed on the battlefield. She one of the few strong female characters in Vergil's Aeneid.

Camillus and camilla were two Latin nouns designating children helping at religious services, much like altar boys. These young boys and girls were chosen among the children of the Roman nobility to attend the priests in the sacrifices for the gods.

A famous contemporary bearer of the name is Camilla Parker-Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall and wife of Prince Charles of Wales.
