  • Additional Info:
Betony is a purple flowering variety in the Stachys genus of plants. Often known alternatively as "bishop's wort," betony is native to most of Europe and some of North Africa and was historically used to treat heartburn, headaches, and anxiety, among other ailments. Its etymology is uncertain; older research works claim it is related to a lost Brithonic word meaning "good for the head," but more modern works usually cite it as having derived from the name of the Vettones, a Celtic tribe that resided on the Iberian peninsula.

Betony holds some appeal for modern parents because of its similarity to the name Bethany.
