    There have been various saints named Bernard. The St Bernard dogs are named for St Bernard of Menthon who established a hospice on what is now known as the St Bernard Pass. This is the pass over the Pennine Alps of Switzerland and Italy. The dogs were used as companions to the monks, and to guide travellers through the Pass.

    St Bernard of Clairvaux was a French abbot, responsible for the growth of the Cistercian order of monks. He is the patron saint of beekeepers.
