From the old Breton name Arzhel, composed of the words arz (a bear, signifying a warrior) and maël (prince).

Arzhel is said to be a Welsh monk in the 6th century who came to Armorique (Brittany).
His thaumaturge powers made him famous, so that the King of Francs, Childebert I, called him to his court. He stayed there for seven years and died in 552 in a village that now bears his name, Saint-Armel.
