Additional info: |
The name seems to have been first mentioned in the opera "The Bohemian Girl" (1843) by Irish composer Michael W. Balfe. Balfe was married to a Hungarian singer called Lina Rosa, Lina being a pet form of Karolina. Arline may thus be a pet form related to Charles and its feminine variants, such as Caroline or Karolina. The later American form Arlene - rendered popular by actresses as Arlene Dahl and Arlene Francis - might have influenced by names such as Charlene, also from Charles. |
