    Alice was an extremely common name in medieval England, though it frequently appeared in the alternate form Alys. It is found several times in Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales," most famously as the name of the Wife of Bath. The name fell into disuse for many centuries in favor of Biblical and more exotic European names, but was revived in the nineteenth century.

    One of Queen Victoria's daughters was named Alice; her great-grandson is Prince Philip, the husband of Elizabeth II of England.

    The name Alice was commonly found in Victorian literature. In Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass", Alice is a young girl who finds herself in a strange and curious land. Alice is also the name of one of the Munro daughters in James Fenimore Coopers' "The Last of the Mohicans."

    In geography, Alice Springs is a town in central Australia. It was named after the wife of Charles Todd, Alice Bell. Charles Todd was responsible for setting up telegraph lines across Australia.

    Alice is particularly popular in Sweden - it was the 9th most popular name in 2006.
