Alcina is a beautiful and deadly sorceress who turns her lovers into beasts, rocks and streams in "Orlando Furioso", a 16th-century Italian epic poem by Ludovico Ariosto. In the 18th-century, the German composer Händel turned her story into an opera called "Alcina".
The name Alcina is derived from the Latinized Greek mythological name Alcinous, meaning "strong-willed; mighty mind".
